Tikal is perhaps the most impressive group of structures from the ancient world. Tikal itself is an actual city, it is enormous and you should plan to spend at the very least a long and full day to just scratch the surface.
The pyramids that are uncovered for us to see here are all very impressive and surprisingly well preserved. These pyramids are the step style pyramid with many of the structures having the long full height staircase from ground to the top. When walking around it is quite easy to picture an ancient King standing on the impressive structures in the town square.
One of the other great things about a visit to Tikal is that you can actually walk on the pyramids. Tikal is not just a visual experience, you get feel it, climb it and be in it.
The pedestals at the bottom of the pyramid is where they would lay down animals for sacrifice. According to the tour guide the stones where covered with animal skins, animals where placed on the stones and sacrificed for their religious or cultural reasons.
Me at in a doorway.
Climbing the pyramids made me feel alive. It is easy to feel a connection with an ancient pyramid when you get to climb it and feel it: see the view it affords us as well as the ancient peoples that stood in the same spot.
